I am so happy to have found blogging. It has changed many aspects of my life, and in really unexpected ways.
You see, I have been an avid blog reader for a really long time, but I thought that becoming a blogger myself was completely out of reach. What did I have to say and contribute to the web that hasn’t been said by 100 other more eloquent and articulate writers already?
I felt like no one would read my posts except my family, and that it was just going to be a hobby.
That’s kind of how this blog got started—as a hobby.
I was a newly minted stay at home mom, struggling…really struggling…to adjust to being in the house all day. I wanted to be home with my child in theory, but day-to-day I really missed work. Plus, being a stay at home mom is HARD!
However, going back to work just didn’t make sense. My entire paycheck and then some would have gone to childcare. Plus, we already had to make significant adjustments to our finances in order for me to stay home (or lose my paycheck to childcare, either way). We started a budget for the first time, cut our expenses in half, moved somewhere affordable, and adopted a new frugal lifestyle.
Going back to work felt like a selfish decision for our specific situation, and I knew God was calling me to stay home.
So with my postpartum hormones flowing, a new baby that I was struggling to breastfeed, and a whole new life that had changed in an instant…I was lost. Postpartum depression hit hard, and I turned to reading the blogs I used to enjoy.
That’s when it hit me. I have always wanted to start a blog, why not now? It is one of the few businesses that you can start up with almost no investment, I have a lot of friends who make a lot of money blogging, and I needed something to give my life a little of the structure and mission that I had when I worked outside the home.
I signed up for Elite Blog Academy at the recommendation of a friend and successful blogger, and I haven’t looked back since!
Blogging is amazing! And whether you have considered the possibility of starting one, or you already love to write and have a blog going…these are the incredible yet completely unexpected benefits I have experienced since becoming a blogger.
I make my own schedule
The job I had before my child was born included really long hours, and I usually worked in the evenings, got called out in the middle of the night, and worked three weekends a month. On top of all that, getting a holiday off was a joke—it wasn’t going to happen.
No longer! I make my own schedule now as a blogger!
Nothing is more helpful to a new mom than being able to work while your child is napping, taking a few hours here and there to get things done.
No more 9-5, no more weekends (I make this a strict rule), and I can take a vacation whenever I want, because I am my own boss!
How good does that sound? If you are a morning person, great! Work all morning and be off by lunchtime. Or you can do the opposite and work late at night! You do what works for you when you are a blogger!
The flexibility is marvelous, and it allows me to reach my goals while working with my family’s schedule.
Create my own platform
This is a big one that I never imagined I would enjoy as much as I do.
I write about what I love! I really enjoy being a parent and sharing what I have learned (and what I have really messed up on) as a new mom. I also love writing about personal finance. The amount of freedom our family has experienced from budgeting (who knew?) is something I want to shout from the mountaintops and share with the world!
With a blog that is all mine (no boss, no CEO, no shareholders), I can write about what I choose. I have created a platform that brings parenting and budgeting together. It is exactly what I want to write about, and it is a message I really care about sharing.
Maybe you have something like that, too—something that you can’t shut up about when you are together with friends, and would love to turn into a job somehow. Start a blog!
I read quite a few blogs that are all about Disney World. If you love Disney, this would be your dream job.
So get out there…create a blog that is your dream job!
Oh yeah, and blogs do make money.
Sometimes lots and lots of money (I am talking 7 figures a year…and on up). There isn’t really a cap on how much you can make with a blog.
Crazy, right? If you enjoy writing and you create your dream job out of your blog platform, making money is just icing on the cake.
For a while, my blog just made a little money here and there. But that “side money” was enough to pay off three credit cards, and the medical bills from my son’s delivery and my subsequent complications. It wasn’t exactly chump change!
Now I am finally making a regular paycheck. It isn’t a lot at this point, but it just keeps growing!
I make money from ad revenue (those ads you see in my sidebar) and from affiliates. If you are curious, feel free to check out what affiliates I am working with.
Here it is. My #1 completely unexpected benefit from blogging. Hope.
I love writing and reaching out to other parents and frugal families. And as I watch my page views grow and grow, I feel like I have achieved SO MUCH.
My ambition has a place to flourish now. This was really important to me, and it was a big reason why I felt so uncomfortable transitioning to a stay at home mom. Not everyone feels this way, but I did.
Now that I have a blog, I feel like I am helping out my family financially with the little money I make, and I am starting to really think about my blog as a business.
I have hope that I will start making a full time income very soon. And now that I have found a job that I love, that I can do while staying at home, I have hope that our lives will only get better and better.
How to get started
When I started my blog, I was pretty clueless. I signed up for Elite Blog Academy, which took me step-by-step to making a successful, profitable blog. It is expensive, I will definitely admit that. But I decided it was time to invest in myself, and I have made back the investment in EBA a few times over.
Elite Blog Academy was the training I needed to get the blog off the ground. The friends I have made, knowledge I have gained, and the incredible network of people willing to help out continue to renew my hope that House of Hermens will only continue to grow.
If you are interested in breaking out of the 9-5 or or if starting a blog is on your heart, I can’t recommend Elite Blog Academy enough. It will give you all the tools you need to succeed, so you can start enjoying your own unexpected benefits of blogging as soon as possible.
The course is only open once a year, so SIGN UP HERE to get on the waiting list.
**UPDATE** EBA is open this week, and will close again on 3/3…Sign up now!
Becoming a blogger helped me overcome postpartum depression and adjust to staying at home, gave me something to work towards, and allowed me to create a business platform that I absolutely love. But more than anything, it gave me hope that I will continue to grow my blog, find my place as a work-from-home mom, and eventually make a full-time income. It changed my life and my family’s life, and it has made me a happier mom.
